RIP: Wisława Szymborska

Given that she was 89, Wisława Szymborska‘s passing was not necessarily unexpected…but it’s still a sad event and a great loss to poetry.

I discovered Szymborska’s work just 10 years ago…five years after she was awarded the Nobel Prize. I was immediately captivated by the power in her deceptively simple poems, particularly those that delved into war and violence and the brutalities we are capable of inflicting on one another.
