Like many others, including some who won’t admit it, I find myself making resolutions as one year fades into the next. As in years past, I will spare my three readers (hi Mom!) from all of them except my 12×12 plan for the year. 10×10 in 2010 was semi-productive, 11×11 in 2011 was a failure…perhaps this will be the year I get it right.
So, my 12×12 projects for the year are a bit different this time in both scope (I’m trying to be more reasonable) and topics (I’m including some items that aren’t about art with the theory that they affect my creativity). And here it is:
Living
- Hit the gym at least 144 times…a bit less than 3 times per week should be doable (and about 120 more times than last year).
Folding
- Fold–in a manner satisfactory to myself:
-
The 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
-
12 origami modular models using a variety of techniques including Phizz and Sonobe units and including rings/wreaths, dodecahedrons, etc. and/or relatively complex tessellations.
-
Corresponding
-
Send 12 letters using different origami letter folds and envelopes.
-
Send 12 charming notes to authors.
Writing
-
Complete a 12-entry poem-writing sprint.
Curating
- Post 12 entries in each of four categories to my oft-neglected Commonplace Book:
- Poetry
- Fiction
- Essays
- Lyrics
Remembering
-
Memorize 12 touchstone poems.
- Read (or re-read) 12 more Shakespeare plays, finishing my reading of the histories and tossing in a few others that are high on my list:
- Henry IV, Part 2
- Henry V
- Henry VI, Part 1
- Henry VI, Part 2
- Henry VI, Part 3
- Richard III
- Henry VIII
- Coriolanus
- Romeo and Juliet
- Midsummer Night’s Dream
- Much Ado About Nothing
- Coriolanus
- Continue Reading Montaigne, hopefully more than a dozen new essays, but definitely including:
- Of vanity
- Of cannibals
- Of experience
- Of solitude
- Of friendship
- Of books
- Of the art of discussion
- Of practice
- Of repentance
- Of virtue
- Of anger
- Of diversion

Inspiring as always. Love the zodiac origami challenge–you had better post photos.
I think you’re amazing in so many ways. I wish you could see yourself through my eyes more often.
